**How to Plant a Terrarium**
When you can't grow outdoors, create an indoor garden that fits on a tabletop.
What You Need
- A planting container
- Plants
- Gravel or small stones for drainage
- Coir Brick
- Fiberglass screen
How to Plant
1. Choose the Container
- Closed containers for high humidity (jungle-like) environments.
- Open containers for cactus, succulents, and plants preferring less humidity.
- Opt for clear, smooth glass for the best view.
2. Prepare the Planting Medium
- Soak coir bricks in warm water for 30 minutes until they expand.
- Break up the coir for an airy texture that holds water without becoming soggy.
3. Create Drainage
- Add 1-2 inches of gravel at the bottom of the container for drainage.
- Cut a piece of fiberglass window screen to cover the gravel, preventing soil from mixing with the gravel.
4. Add Soil
- Place moistened coir on top of the screen, adding 2-3 inches depending on container depth.
- Consider sloping the soil if the terrarium will be viewed from one side.
5. Arrange the Plants
- Select and arrange plants outside the container first.
- Start with the largest plant and trim roots as needed to fit.
- Place the tallest plant towards the back or off-center for asymmetry.
- Divide multiple plants in one pot to create unity in the design.
6. Add Moss
- Rehydrate sheet moss in water, break into small bits, and place it around the plants.
7. Position Plants and Moss
- Use tongs or tweezers to place plants and moss within the terrarium.
8. Water and Maintain
- Water the terrarium occasionally, keeping the water level just below the screen.
- Trim plants as needed.
