Medium For Growing Potted Plants

Medium for growing potted plants: Commonly used soilless medium

⑴ Bagasse: It is mostly used in tropical areas and has a high carbon to nitrogen ratio. Nitrogen must be added to meet the needs of rapid decomposition by microorganisms. Bagasse has a high water holding capacity, decomposes quickly in the container, is easy to be dense, and causes poor ventilation and drainage, so it is rarely used in potting mixed media. The composted bagasse can be mixed into the field soil, especially for clay, which can improve it.

(2) Bark: Pine bark and hardwood bark have good physical properties and can partially replace peat as a potting medium. The main problem of fresh bark is its high carbon and nitrogen. Some bark, such as press bark, contains toxic components to plants, and the toxicity should be degraded by composting or leaching.
